Raining? No, it’s pouring!

Actually, it’s a nice sunny day here–though the threat of afternoon rain looms. My subject line refers to the “flood” of responses I’m starting to get to my press release distribution.

It started yesterday with a phone call from the book critic for USA Today. That contact didn’t start with a press release but rather an e-mail message when I heard the paper was interviewing King. I volunteered my services as a “Dark Tower” expert, never expecting anything to come of it. Turns out, I was over-pessimistic and I ended up e-mailing back and forth with him several times and speaking with him once. The piece will run tomorrow and at the very least he plans to mention The Road to the Dark Tower and if he can appropriate a couple of more column inches he may use some of my quotes.

Then I had an e-mail from the features editor for one of the local newspapers, the one that I write book reviews for. Now this is a strange gig — I’ve never met anyone who works for the paper. I drop my reviews off at a bureau office and they somehow end up in the paper thereafter! Anyhow, two community papers are strongly affiliated and I did an interview with one of them several months ago as part of a feature on local authors that never ran. The material was passed on to the other paper and now they’re going to do a piece on me this Sunday. I added some more information to the earlier interview.

A couple of hours later, I had an e-mail from a reporter for the Saint John Telegraph-Journal, which is one of the provincial newspapers from where I grew up. They do a weekly column called ‘Where Are They Now?’ where they “profile a New Brunswicker or former resident who has gone on to do impressive things.” Would I be interested in setting up an interview with them? Hell, yes!

Just now I had a call from the local supplement editor for the Houston Chronicle, who also wants to do an interview, a live one this time with a photographer and everything. Tentatively scheduled for the local bookstore on Friday afternoon.

For some reason, I can’t get the lyrics to “Rolling Stone” out of my head. Gonna by five copies for my mother…

Small wonder I’m not sleeping very well these days. Good things keep happening to me. My wife tells me I live a charmed life, and I cannot argue with that.

Bev, you’re Canadian? I had no idea! I’m in Ottawa (well, okay Carleton Place now, but almost nobody knows where that is!).

Glad to hear things are looking good for ROAD!

    Charmed life, indeed. ; )

We get USA Today here at work, so I’ll be sure to check out the article. I can’t wait to read it, as a matter of fact.

I’m glad things are going well.

Yep, I grew up in New Brunswick and spent eight years in Halifax attending Dalhousie University. That was the first part of the interview today — how did someone from rural northern New Brunswick end up in Texas writing a book about Stephen King’s work?!

Very cool. My father’s family is from NB, and Halifax is just one cool city! I’m hoping to get back there for a visit next summer.
