Blindsided

Fortunately, the rains have abated and the floodwaters downtown have receded for the most part, though I expect there are some people still mopping up and drying out. The ground is saturated, so any more water was just going to sit on the surface and flow, so it’s a good thing that we don’t seem inclined to get much more for now.
Horror Fiction News named this Live Journal feed of the week! You just never know who’s out there paying attention. Even more of a surprise, and a highly flattering one at that, Steve Vernon interviewed Tom Monteleone (Borderlands) for Hellnotes, and in answer to the question “What horror writers should hungry readers be looking for over the next five years?” Il Padrone (as we know him) said, “Tim Waggoner. Scott Nicholson. Harry Shannon. Brian Keene. Geoff Cooper. Joe Hill. Bell Wilson. Holly Newstein. Kealan Burke. Mike Canfield. Bill Gauthier. Bev Vincent.” Wow. Didn’t see that coming. Simply wow. That’s a mighty fine lineup to be mentioned with.
I’m still waiting for my last Doctor Who episodes to arrive, so I decided to pop in the tape of The Five Doctors that came as a companion to The King’s Demons. This is the refurbished, cleaned-up, spiffy reissue of the episode—I’ve only watched the original incarnation in the past. The time scoop special effects are nicer than the original rotating triangle in the sky. I’ve only watched the first half so far, but it’s definitely a cleaner, crisper presentation. Course, that could be because our other tape is 15 years old!

Weirdly, I prefer the original Five Doctors edition, even though some of the moments that got cleaned up or edited out later are laughably awful. I prefer the original look of the time scoop, too.
Isn’t it odd that the Second Doctor can’t think of what rhymes with “go” when the other words “above”, “between” and [blank]?
Oh, and I watched Arc of Infinity last night. I forgot about my favorite line from DW of all time: When that guy is about to get shot and he looks at the gun and says, “Impulse laser?” Because identifying the weapon is what we all do in our final moments!

I laughed at that, too. Colt .45? Bang!
I like the topsy-turvy nature of the younger looking doctor being older than his crotchety old younger self. “Fortunately I’ve mellowed with age.” A little bit like living backwards in time, but not quite.

Kind of like Mork’s son, Jonathan Winters!

Oh, and The Five Doctors has my second favorite line: When the Master walks into the council room and sees the female one. “Cancellor Flavia!” as if his TARDIS is wallpapered with pinups of her!

The way the actor tends to leer at people, maybe he does. Strip off that high councellor rigamarole and she might be Miss Time Lord 3624. (36).

It’s also odd that the doctor is still alive after the chess board incident, given that he divined that the solution was based on π…and then used the wrong value: 3.14287 instead of 3.14159!

Apparently Pi is different on Gallifrey.

They kept talking about going “back to Gallifrey” at the end, as if the Dark Tower were on some other planet, when it clearly wasn’t.

I know. I can only guess that BBC script editors were in short supply at the time.
I’ve been exclaiming “Chancellor Flavia!” in my head for days now.

Just so long as they’re not the first words out of your mouth when you see me at NECON.

Well NOW they will be!

My shirt will be disappointed.

At some point I’ll post pictures from the Stokers that show me in the $10 Blue Shirt of Awesomeness, and then we’ll be even.
