Sex crimes

Turned in my CD column this morning. I got a little late-breaking news about the novel King is working on now to shoehorn in at the last moment. You could wait for #57 to come out, or you can read about it at News From The Dead Zone.

I’ve started taking Friday morning off from writing—except today, because of my previously mentioned deadline—because I’m out later than usual on Thursdays now at Citizens’ Police Academy. Last night’s class was more academic than the first one. The speaker was a police profiler who spoke at length about three of the four major types of pedophiles. (He didn’t have time to cover all four.) The guy has traveled to prisons as far away as San Quentin to interview convicted pedophiles (many of them also murderers) to find out what makes them tick. It was all very interesting, especially because he believes that people who fit into each category are extremely predictable, and that “fixated pedophiles” (the first category) were essentially the same 100 years ago and will be essentially the same 100 years from now.

Next week we go downtown to learn about SWAT operations, which should be interesting. The big news, though, is confirmation that we’re going to get 90 minutes on the shooting range one night. I had been considering going to a private shooting range to handle some weapons and squeeze off a few shots, but now we’ll be getting the scoop from the pros.

The interesting thing about the “segregation” element in this season’s Survivor is that it is defined through Caucasian eyes. By that I mean that the Asian tribe is made up of Vietnamese, Koreans, Filipinos, etc. who seem more different from each other than Whites and Hispanics (separate tribes). I think the ethnic differences are going to matter little at the beginning, because the real conflict will remain within the tribes until there are merges. That’s when things might get heated.

Don’t forget to check out my new essay at Storytellers Unplugged on Sunday. I have it all written and ready to post.
