A laugh a minute

Last night was comedy night on CBS. I watched How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory and Two-and-a-half Men and laughed through them all. Big Bang was even funnier than I thought it would be. I was sure they had already shown all the good stuff in the promos that have been airing non-stop for several weeks, but there were some good surprise scenes, like the trip to Penny’s ex-boyfriend’s apartment. It was fun to see Mandy Moore “playing Courtney Love” on HIMYM and to see Barney relegated to the drag on the party for a change. All three shows got off to strong starts. Sometimes I’m amazed at how far things have (d)evolved on network TV. Who would have thought ten years ago that a character on an early evening comedy would discuss his balls without using any euphemisms. I remember (this will age me) when saying the word “pregnant” on I Love Lucy was edgy, or hearing the sound of a toilet flush on All in the Family.

Tonight is a complicated night, primarily because Boston Legal runs for 90 minutes. That puts House, The Unit and Boston Legal all on at the same time for 30 minutes. Time to make sure all the recording devices work.

I finished the first draft of the new short story this morning. It came in at about 2300 words, well inside the 2500 word maximum. I sent it off to my first reader to see if I was too heavy handed in a couple of allusions and for general commentary. I still have two weeks to turn it in, so I’ll probably sit on it for a while before hitting it with the red pen again.
