Throttle: King/Hill to Collaborate on Novella

edited February 2019 in General news
Stephen King and Joe Hill to Collaborate on Novella

Just say the name and the memories come flooding back -- Somewhere in Time, Duel, The Shrinking Man, I Am Legend, and countless more. He's one of the greatest storytellers of our time -- or any time.

Now Gauntlet Press has assembled He Is Legend: Celebrating Richard Matheson, a spectacular anthology of original, never-before published stories by today's best writers -- stories set in Richard Matheson's own fictional universes, and published with Mr. Matheson's complete cooperation!

And, among the many contributions to the book is the first collaboration ever between Stephen King and his son Joe Hill, the novella "Throttle" their take on Matheson's classic "Duel." This is, obviously, a once-in-a-lifetime publishing event as its father and sons first collaboration. Both Stephen King and Joe Hill will be signing both the numbered and lettered editions.

Other contributors to this anthology, edited by Christopher Conlon, include F. Paul Wilson, Joe Lansdale, Whitley Strieber, Richard Christian Matheson, William F. Nolan, Gary Braunbeck, Thomas Monteleone, John Shirley and an introduction by Ramsey Campbell (additional contributors will be announced at a later date).

And, as an added bonus, He Is Legend features the original full-length screenplay "Conjure Wife" -- over 20,000 never-before published words by Richard Matheson himself, in collaboration with the late-Charles Beaumont that was filmed at "Burn, Witch Burn."

Cover art and six interior illustrations by Matheson's favorite artist Harry O. Morris.

To be released in February 2009 this signed limited edition will appear in the following states:

  • 750 copy signed numbered edition (signed by all contributors except Richard Matheson) for $150.
  • This numbered edition with a special beveled bonded leather slipcase with the cover art inset into the slipcase for $200 (must be ordered before November 1 to receive this slipcase)
  • Bonded leather slipcase (not beveled and without the cover art) for $25 (this is not a different version of the book, just a slipcase).
  • 52 copy lettered edition in a special bonded leather traycase (design to be determined later). This is the only edition that will be signed by Richard Matheson for $500

Comments

  • Most impressive line-up. Way out of my snack bracket. Hopefully this will see a more pocket book friendly release down the road.
  • The numbered edition is sold out as of 11:59 April 2. Within the next 24 hours the website will indicate the edition is sold out and a waiting list will be created. We still have 100+ orders to process we received prior to the deadline. We should be able to provide copies for all for ordering prior to this deadline. We should have the backlog completed by the end of the weekend.

The lettered edition is also sold out -- oversubscribed in fact -- and a lottery will be held among those who requested a copy of the book before a specific cutoff date.
  • Nick Wechsler revs 'Throttle'

King-Hill horror novella headed to bigscreen

Producer Nick Wechsler has optioned screen rights to "Throttle," a 60-page novella written by father-son authors Stephen King and Joe Hill.

Wechsler used his own coin to option the tale.

The protags in the King-Hill novella are father-son members of a motorcycle gang that's chased through the desert by an 18-wheel tanker truck. The novella will be published in 2009 in "He Is Legend," an anthology dedicated to Richard Matheson, author of "I Am Legend."

"It has elements of iconic films like 'Duel' and 'Breakdown,' but with a horror element that I want to push," Wechsler said. Literary collaboration is the first between King and his son.

An adaptation of Hill's novel "Heart-Shaped Box" is moving toward production at Warner Bros. with a script by Neil Jordan. The studio is looking for a director. Meanwhile, Hill's graphic novel "Locke & Key" is being developed by Dimension.

Wechsler is still formulating his development strategy but is known for moving quickly to acquire material and then taking his time to find a studio to back it. He acquired Cormac McCarthy novel "The Road" long before it won the Pulitzer Prize. The John Hillcoat-directed film, which stars Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron, will go out through Dimension Films on Nov. 26.

Wechsler is also in post-production on the Robert Schwentke-directed adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger novel "The Time Traveler's Wife," starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. New Line and Warner Bros. will release that film on Dec. 25.

The "Throttle" deal was brokered by Hotchkiss and Associates and the Michael Choate Agency.
  • Road Rage CD audio, includes "Duel" and "Throttle," from Harper Audio in January.
  • HE IS LEGEND, the Richard Matheson tribute anthology Christopher Conlon edited in 2009 for Gauntlet Press, will be reprinted by Tor in trade hardcover in the fall of this year, with the paperback appearing sometime after that. There will also be a Japanese reprint.
  • Chris Conlon writes:

Just wanted to mention that the Tor reprint of my Stoker Award-winning Richard Matheson tribute anthology, HE IS LEGEND, is in bookstores today. The book includes all-new Mathesonian sequels, prequels, and variations from Stephen King & Joe Hill (their first-ever collaboration), F. Paul Wilson, Joe Lansdale, Whitley Strieber, Nancy A. Collins, and a bunch more. The introduction is by Ramsey Campbell. The trade paperback lists at $15.99 ($10.87 on Amazon), the hardcover at $25.99 ($19.75 on Amazon). There is also a Kindle edition priced at $9.99. Take a look here for info:

The original Gauntlet signed edition of this book was pricey, so I hope that Matheson fans who weren't able to pick up that version can enjoy this one!

  • The TOR trade edition, unlike the Gauntlet Press limited edition does NOT include the Richard Matheson/Charles Beaumont screenplay for "Conjure Wife."

Throttle, the novella by Stephen King and his son, novelist Joe Hill, is getting the big-screen treatment.

Producer Emile Gladstone and his A Bigger Boat Productions have optioned the story and set John Scott III, the writer of the 2015 Arnold Schwarzenegger zombie movie Maggie, to pen the screenplay.

Taking its inspiration from the classic Richard Matheson short story Duel, Throttle tells of a motorcycle gang riding across a stark Nevada desert, after a deal gone bad, when they become pursued by a faceless trucker hell-bent on revenge. The main thrust of the story is the relationship between a father and son.

The story was originally published in 2009 as part of a Matheson tribute.
  • "In the Tall Grass" and "Throttle," King's two collaborations with Joe Hill, will be included in Hill's forthcoming collection Full Throttle.

...I have both the book and the comic book series.....excellent collaboration and the artwork for the graphic novel was stark and spare, which helped deliver the grittiness of the tale.....
