  • 8. Phantasm — Peacock

Technically, I’ve “seen” this. People always talk so fondly about it. I wasn’t impressed, but couldn’t tell you why, I really don’t remember a whole lot.

So, I decided to watch it again. Wow. I know i saw it at the drive-in and that is where the trouble with my memory lies.

I must have been playing some serious grab ass with my one day husband. Because I didn’t remember much.  Dwarves? There were dwarves? And another planet?

Grab ass was way better than this movie.

    7. Cobweb — Netflix.

This was actually creepy as hell.

  • 1. Nosferatu (2024)  4/5
    2. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2002) 2,5/5
    3. The Long Walk (2025) 4,5/5
    4. Priest (2011) 2/5
    5. Alien Earth Season 1, episode 1&2.
    6. The Wicker Man (1973) 4,5/5
    7. The Invisible Man (2020) 3,5/5
    8. The Watchers (2024) 3/5
    9. Saw (2004) 3/5 this is the original lowbudget movie that started the too many sequels. Not as gory and bloody (though there is blood) as it would become. This as a horror thriller is ok. Danny Glover, Gary Elwes and Monica Potter in the leads. Jigsaw the serialkiller that uses machines and forces you to make choices of different kinds starts here. This movie is more creepy than Gory so to speak. Tobin Bell as Jigsaw has a very minor role. Leigh Whannell who got his start here would go to Insidious, The Invisible Man and The Wolfman. James Wan directed Whannells script.

  • 9. Deadly Friend (FTV)

Teenage genius builds a robot friend and puts his brains to use when things go bad for the girl next door.

Ugh, what a mess. The film starts as something like E.T. meets Short Circuit, a smart kid with an annoying chattering robot best friend who has a dark streak when it comes to protecting the kid. So far, so corny, but the film takes a very dark turn when it’s made obvious the girl next door is being routinely abused by her father, and now the film decides it’s going to be something of a Frankenstein revenge story. The shift from relatively wholesome gee-whiz PG territory to domestic abuse is jarring, but before we can get used to this new direction, the film seems to suddenly decide it’s about campy amounts of violence and gore. Like I said, it’s a mess, not the least of which a tonal mess.

I understand there are a vocal group of horror fans who want you to think this is a hidden gem that needs reassessment or a camp “so bad it’s good” classic, but really this is just a fail on all fronts. Wes Craven himself disowned it due to the heavy amount of studio interference, it’s not the film he wanted to make and according to the studio his original cut wasn’t the film his fans wanted to see. Honestly it’s films like this that make you wonder who is really behind the wheel calling the shots. Didn’t anyone see how un-scary Kristy Swanson looked wearing raccoon mascara and pretending to be a killer robot? Yet the film is presenting this as something filled with horrific pathos. It was horrific all right, horrifically bad.

Watch the basketball head explosion scene on YouTube and save yourself 90 minutes.

    1.5 out of 5 stars.

    9. Saw (2004) #/5
    10. Saw II (2005) 2/5 Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Donnie Wahlberg. I wanted to watch a sequel to see where the downwards trend starts. Its Here. The Creepy feeling is gone and instead much more gore and blood. Basically the same story but lesser acting from the leads. Wahlberg is not good while Smith is ok. Bell has a lot of quasi-philosophical lines of why hes playing his game. Not his fault that all that talk amount to nothing. It is often a mistake to explain too much if you want to make it scary. Much of the franchise is on Netflix i saw (He-he) . There are 10 of them!!!

  • 7) "Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Clones" (2002)

"While pursuing an assassin, Obi Wan uncovers a sinister plot to destroy the Republic. With the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance, the Jedi must defend the galaxy against the evil Sith."

I found this one a bit boring.

    8) "Star Wars  - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" (2005)

"Anakin joins forces with Obi-Wan and sets Palpatine free from the evil clutches of Count Dooku. However, he falls prey to Palpatine and the Jedis' mind games and gives in to temptation."

This is probably the darkest of them all. Very good movie all round.

  • 9. Carry On Screaming* — Tubi

This was once again an Edgar Wright suggestion.

There are a lot of Carry On movies, British sex romps. This was the only “horror” 🤣 movie.

As a host of the Pure Cinema podcast commented, very much resembles Abbott and Costello Meet every creature ever. Total silliness but I had fun.

    11. Låt Den Rätte Komma In (2008) 4,5/5 Swedish movie. This is called Let The Right One In when translated. Hollywood made their own version Let Me In some years later but this is supreme to that. Kåre Hedenbrant plays a 12 year old child that meets the newly moved in girl Eli (Lina Leandersson) that moved nextdoors. Shes also 12 but has been 12 for a very long time as she puts it. They become friends. Excellent spin on the vampire genre from the book of John Ajvide Lindqvist. Both child actors carry this movie on their own and are great. There is no grown up actors of real importance here but this is not YA. The atmosphere of Stockholm suburbia is also very well captured. On of the better vampire movies i've seen. Not on the level with Herzogs Nosferatu but just under. Not jump scares really and we somehow end up cheering for the vampire.

  • 10. Xtro (FTV)

Dad gets abducted by aliens and returns three years later not quite himself.

This is one of those fun little 80’s “latex monsters and slime” sci-fi horror films that gets by more on creativity than high budget. If you like stuff like “Basket Case” you know what I’m talking about. This was actually on the list of “video nasties” and was banned in the UK for quite some time, but it’s really not nasty at all—okay, maybe that alien birth scene, but really aren’t all good alien birth scenes a little bit messy?

It’s sort of a combination of “Alien” and “The Hidden”, quite possibly even a little bit of “The Brood” thrown in for good measure. Adding to the fun are the segments that involve monsters directly from the little boy’s imagination—his toys literally come to life and wreak havoc. Look for Maryam D’Abo (pre-Bond girl phase) who seems to have been put in this film soley to increase the body count and the nudity. Xtro is no classic but it’s an enjoyable and often just plain weird watch for October.

This is why we love practical effects.

    3.5 out of 5 stars.

    5. The Astronaut

    The Astronaut......

An astronaut returns to earth but has a blackout during the decent. While in recovery she begins hallucinating and begins to suspect that something extraterrestrial may have returned with her.

This started off ok but ran out of steam, it was billed as a horror but I've had scarier encounters weeding my flower beds.🤔

    12. Saw III (2006) 1,5/5 This is pure trash level now.. The story gets thinner and thinner the longer the movie wears on. Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith together with Angus Macfadyen have the leads but neither is very convincing. Netflix has the first 6 in the series but i dont think i can stand more of this level of trash. Reason i saw the sequels is i saw (he-he) that they disappear from netflix after october is over.
