Navy officer leaves a lofty decision to King

edited September 2008 in General news
During Cmdr. Clay Zocher's 25-plus years in the Navy, his main weapons against long, lonesome months at sea or in foreign lands were the books of Stephen King.

So when Zocher began planning for his retirement, he kept in mind the best-selling author of novels such as "Carrie" and "The Shining."

Traditionally, retiring officers can request flags to be flown in their honor over specific places. Zocher chose the schools he attended — the Forest Hills School in Jackman, Greely High School in Cumberland and the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine — and two ships he served on, the USS Renta and USS Gettysburg.

Zocher also sent a note to his favorite writer.

"Cmdr. Zocher had contacted Stephen King's office and said if he would choose a place to raise a flag, he'd appreciate it," explained Will Pidden, principal of Durham Elementary School, Wednesday afternoon. "Mr. King saw all the other schools Cmdr. Zocher had chosen and decided on Durham Elementary School."
