The Stand returns as part of box set

edited July 2007 in General news
It's scary how much artificial scarcity can spike DVD prices. Take frightmaster Stephen King's The Stand.

First issued on disc in 1999 — early in the DVD era — the eight-hour miniseries about a near-genocidal plague has been out of print for years. So it sells as a collectible for sums far higher than its original retail price of $19.98.

A recent survey of Amazon.com showed auxiliary dealers offering secondhand copies of The Stand for between $55 and $225. Asking prices aren't as high on eBay, but bidding can drive them up.

Yet such prices are sure to drop Sept. 25, when The Stand returns to DVD as part of a box set that includes Golden Years and The Langoliers, also TV miniseries. And otherwise, your King collecting shouldn't require a fortune.

Not nearly as scarce are four King theatrical films that arrive in a new box set this week: Carrie, The Dark Half, Misery and Needful Things.

Each has been issued individually and also grouped in previous box sets.

In fact, the only King DVDs selling for princely sums involve The Stand, which also is in a five-film box set from 2002.

The set's other films are widely available, but with The Stand in the bunch it's been offered secondhand for up to $199.
