There's always King, as in Stephen King (pictured). The novelist talks to ABC News' "Nightline," which airs at 11:35 p.m. Friday on WFTV-Channel 9.

One topic sure to interest movie fans: King's low regard for Stanley Kubrick's film of "The Shining." King finds that version "cold."

"If I can make you feel for my characters, and if you worry that something will happen to them instead of rooting for something to happen to them, for their head to be blown off, or for Freddy to get them with his nails, then I got something going," King tells Jake Tapper.

"In the case of 'The Shining,' Kubrick seemed to be in charge of an ant farm," King adds. "He had turned his people into ants, saying, 'Well, what happens if they do this? What happens if they do that?' I didn't care for that."

Oh, for a follow-up: Isn't hard to turn Jack Nicholson into an ant?

King isn't high on the new wave of horror films, either.

"There's nothing there," King says. "And that walks up to a line that's very close to what they call torture porn, sadism, that sort of thing."

But King is talking to promote "Stephen King's The Mist," a new film.

Here's an important insight to his approach: "I'm always more interested in the people than I am in the monsters. And I'm interested to see how people react under conditions of extreme stress."

He also explains why zealots run into trouble in his stories: "Organized religion gives me the creeps."

ABC News says other topics include King alcoholism, his childhood and his wife's rescue of the "Carrie" manuscript from the garbage.

If you can't watch, ABC says the full interview transcript will be at ABCNEWS.com after "Nightline" airs.
