Needs no introduction, I still love this one just as much as I did when it came out.

    6. IT (2017)
The first chapter of the remake. I loved this, so well done--plenty scary (not just for me) and the casting was perfect.

Watched His House, a pair of refugees from Africa are put up in a
dilapidated house in England after fleeing their wartorn region. Their journey was a tragic one and after a couple of days strange things begin to happen in the house. I really like this, a ghost story with plenty of atmosphere, great performances, definitely worth a look..

  • 30. Scare Package (FTV)

Self-aware horror anthology set around a video rental store.

This movie was fun at times, dumb at other times, occasionally dull, with flashes of brilliance.  In other words, this suffers from the same ailment that afflicts most anthologies: inconsistency.  There are hits and there are misses.  This one is more front-loaded than most: the best segments are in the first half hour, then some "meh" ones in the middle, and the last segment which should have been the tentpole (it was the longest segment) just doesn't work very well.  Horror film critic Joe Bob Briggs shows up in a rather long cameo that's pretty painful to watch--I mean, how can you mess up the simple line "Come with me if  you want to live."  He sounds less emotional than me ordering Moons Over My Hammy at Denny's.

Visually the films don't look much alike and in some cases the picture quality is noticeably bad as if inferior equipment was used, and there was a slight pause between chapters, so this disk isn't recommended from a home theater quality standpoint.  This package feels sort of rushed, maybe the pandemic had something to do with it.

The humor is snarky and self-aware at times, but you can tell there's genuine affection for the horror genre, and the stuff that works, works well.  And a couple of the more ridiculously gory segments are going to warrant a re-watch, but I'll be hitting the skip button on about 50% of this one going forward.

    3 out of 5 stars.

And so glad Jillian dipped her toes in this year.  She did some nice write-ups and I'm glad you two had fun watching these together.

  • 31. Save Yourselves! (FTV)

Screen-addicted young couple go to a remote cabin to unplug from the world, not realizing the apocalypse is about to unfold.

This movie starts out like a light romantic comedy and it pokes fun at urban hipsters and how detached they are from practical knowledge like, say, basic survival skills such as starting a campfire.  But it's clear that something sinister is afoot, and I don't want to spoil too much by going into any specific details, but it's safe to say these two young people are going to be tested.  It's fun for a while because we know something's happening before the couple knows, so a lot of the comedy is derived from the near-misses and their cluelessness, sort of like that long take in Shaun of the Dead when he's completely oblivious to the growing zombie threat.

Some viewers might be a little impatient during this part of the film, but once the ball really gets rolling, we get to see what these two people are made of.  They aren't exactly aspirational characters but in some ways that makes them a bit more real--who can identify with someone who does everything perfectly, anyway?  Potentially dark territory is only touched upon, and the mood is mostly light and humorous, but there are a few "whoah" and "cool" moments, and an ending that is both literally and metaphorically transcendent.  Some critics didn't care for the ending and called it a cop-out, I actually liked it and thought it was bold.  See for yourself.

I honestly don’t know flakers. I would only pick it up for Halloween and dump it — not that interested in it.
