  • This is unbelievable

From FOBBV: "A proposed residential development of 50 homes and 55 private boat slips that FOBBV has been working to stop for 25 years due to impacts it would have to bald eagles, endangered plant species and habitats, and completely inadequate fire evacuation plans (inside a national forest!), not to mention cutting over 2000 trees now used by many animals. The proposed site is visible from the Nest Camera (empty land just beyond the circle of water seen on the left side of lake ) It is foraging habitat for Jackie and Shadow and other bald eagles – imagine seeing (and hearing!) 50 large (vacation rental type) homes and 55 boat slips in what is now natural habitat! We’ve won multiple environmental lawsuits against this project, the latest requiring additional environmental analysis. Now, the County just announced Tuesday (!!) that this project will be on the Board of Supervisors agenda to be approved this Tuesday, Sept 9 at 10 am in San Bernardino, CA.

Another beautiful visit … and Moon Camp questions

    Eagle Image

We got to hear a nice Jackie and Shadow conversation first thing today and then see them visiting separate perch trees.

While Shadow visited the Lookout Snag, Jackie chortled to him from her perch on Twin Pines. He chortled back. They were both there on their separate perches watching the area. After Shadow left, Jackie stayed for 30 minutes more. It was great to see and hear them both!

We also want to answer questions that came up about Moon Camp. The Notice sent by the County is now posted on our website: https://www.friendsofbigbearvalley.org/

Some people want to give comments to the Board of Supervisors – this can be done on this link: https://publiccomments.cob.sbcounty.gov

And some people want to comment on the inadequacy of the Final Environmental Impact Report. This can be done by sending your comments to the County clerk of the board: COB@sbcounty.gov

Thank you to everyone participating in any way. This project would have severe detrimental impact on the eagles as well as other wildlife and endangered plants.

    Thank you!

    Sandy

PS. There is a facebook site “Big Bear Lake Bald Eagles,” not affiliated with Friends of Big Bear Valley in any way that is giving out very false information about this project. They claim the project would benefit the eagles because lakefront homeowners always protect them. They are apparently not aware that the homes will not be on lakefront. The lakefront only includes a parking lot and 55-slip boat marina, adding to traffic, noise and disturbance of the eagles. In addition, they do not seem to be aware of the history of lakefront homeowners in Big Bear. A project by this same developer had a mitigation to protect eagles, including having set aside eagle perch trees. Within a year, these lakefront owners cut down the eagle perch trees to put in a tennis court. You are certainly welcome to read from that facebook page, but please know that you will be given lots of made-up stories and complete misinformation, not only about this project but about lots of other things

It was a beautiful morning to witness M15 and F23 begin their courtship strengthening their bond to each other for Season 14. They arrived together to the nest tree, added new sticks (F23-2 small ones & M15 one large one)to the nest, perched & vocalized together watching their territory and ate an unknown food item on the ground in the west pasture. F chose her sticks from the front pines in the nest tree pasture and M chose his from a pine tree in the west pasture. M15 'spied' food in the west pasture... perhaps a Great Blue Heron's breakfast as one flew from the area shortly after M arrived. M ate on the ground while F23 watched from a nearby tree before she flew to the ground to eat the food also. M flew to the bent pine tree in the west pasture while F ate the food item. F23 got 'spooked' by a horse walking close to her and flew north toward the stables before joining M15 in the bent pine tree where they vocalized mutually, preened and continued to watch their territory in the shade of the tree. We all wish for a successful nesting season for M&F. They are off to a great start!❤🦅🦅❤ Thank you SWFEC, hosted by Dick Pritchett Real Estate, for providing & maintaining suitable trees & environment for this Bald Eagle Family. www.SWFLEagleCam.com Thank you to Dick Pritchett Real Estate (SWFEC), Church of the Nazarene, Eagle Landing & several friends for allowing me to film on their premises. And thank you to my 'spotter'.

Cooler autumn temps on the way… plus a special mes

    Eagle Image

This past week, Jackie and Shadow have remained in the area and are likely enjoying these last days of summer together. Even though we haven't seen them too much, it's been wonderful to hear their morning and evening vocals every day this past week.

Shadow spent Wednesday night tucked in on the Roost Tree. The next morning, he perched for about half an hour on their favorite Lookout Snag branch. After hearing Jackie's beautiful chortles in the distance, he flew off, heading in the direction of her calls.

On Thursday afternoon, a severe lightning storm brought heavy rain to the area. The cameras were offline for several hours and overnight but when they resumed the next morning, the wildlife returned from sheltering in place, and the lake and forest were a glorious sight!

The various hawks and other local feathered friends have been enjoying the many peaceful forest perch trees, as have the daily feathered visitors that often stop by the nest.

The nest's frequent nighttime basement dwellers, Fiona the flying squirrel and her swift pal Fast Freddie, have also been busy scurrying around in the nest together at night.

Since tomorrow marks the beginning of autumn, this means cooler and shorter days with less sunlight, and longer cooler nights.

Exactly one year ago today, Jackie and Shadow returned to the nest and began some early nestorations. With cooler temperatures on the way, we will wait with great anticipation for the first new stick to be brought to the nest. They have used this nest for the past seven years, so that leads one to believe and hope they will continue to do so.

    Happy Fall eagle family!

This is not the "official" site.  But since you had issues seeing posts, thought this alternate would help with photos.  You will note some posters, on Nature Chat,  still call F23 Maybelline.  The Pritchett site has the educational chats.   I will attempt to post using info from Pritchett site chats.
