How Does YOUR Garden Grow?

I'm just going to start this thread for those who might want to discuss crops.  Or flowers. Or landscape.

I am very excited today.  I just harvested my first zukes.  EIGHT!

Yes.  THe small things in life give me great joy, because I'm boring.

I have a bunch of tomatoes but they are green, and I noticed my cukes are starting to shoot out there.  I am so excited.

My raised boxes laid fallow for 3 years, thank you for that tip green-thumb God or Jesus or whomever it was you put in charge of crop rotation.  Everything is thriving!

My bell pepper plants, all colors, are getting big but I think the damn squirrels are eating the little fruit before they can grow.

I have flowers, I see little pea sized bells and then the next day, they are gone.

I may have to build some sort of MMA cage thing around them.

  • We do not have space for a garden but we plant flowers all around. Got a beautiful Lily plant this year, the flowers are a gorgeous, deep burgandy! None are bloomed right now, but there are new shoots, so soon.

But, we are having trouble with all of our trees. Our Aspen has always thrived. This is its 6th year and it has not put leaves on at all. None. The buds are dry. It looks like it is putting out new runners from the ground.

My plum tree, same thing. No leaves, but new runner coming up. It is 4 or 5 years in the ground.

Our maple has big leaves down low, from the ground about 18 inches up the trunk, but no leaves on the branches. It is the newest tree, we put it in last spring.

I am just so unhappy about this! Breaks my heart. I don't know what to do. Surely, even with the late hail we got last summer, they didn't all just die?!? 😥

I want to have someone look at them but no idea who to call for something like that.

Do you have a garden center you could call.  Just describing them as you did, they might be able to give you an idea of what is going on.  Are the branches bendable and supple? Or would they snap if you bent them?

That is very strange that they ALL wouldn't have leaves, and they are all different trees so not a disease that would be unique to one type of tree.

Is there an extension office you could call?  It's free.

  • Some branches will bend, some break right off.

There is an extension office listed for my county, I will try that. Thank you!

  • Let me know what they say, I would be interested.

One more trash day and I'll have all the mess from the fence/bush encounter outta here.

That has been a damn pain in the ass.  But I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

    Hopefully it isn't death.

  • Houston, I have a bell pepper!

Keeping a close watch over it.  This is the first one that is actually starting to get big because the squirrels kept eating the little pea-sized baby ones.  It's looking good and promising.

The tomatoes are refusing to get red.  They hang there all arrogant and green.

My tomatoes did this last summer, I swear they were just taunting me for months and then, BAM... red. And they were horrible, very little flavour and had that hard white core that ran thickly through the centre.

That is so disappointing isn't it?  I keep wandering out nonchalantly whistling, looking at the sky, sort of toe-ing at the dirt, and then I do a jump and an aha! right in their tomato-y faces, but they are sneaky bastids.  Probably getting all red and plump behind my back, f'in' shapeshifters.

  • I have a handful of bush beans ready to pick.  Not enough to cook or freeze -- can they be eaten raw?  And I guess there are 3 types of these so I need to figure out which mine is.  I don't think the tag said for sure.

    Son. of. a. biotch.

My one lone pepper has Blossom End Rot.  Apparently, it can be from inconsistent watering and no calcium.

So, to remedy this, I need to purchase calcium or bone meal, fertilizer, epsom salts and water more consistent.  The watering thing, I am consistent. I just apparently water too much. So back off on the water.

Unfortunately, once a plant has this, it's hard to get rid of it and they recommend just pulling out the plant and starting again.  Uh, yeah.  Too late in the growing season for that.  The video I watched also said I could just cut that bad part off and eat the other part.  But I'm not going to.  The last thing I need is some mutated Blossom Human Rot.

Going to the store and buying organic peppers is probably more cost efficient.  But bone meal seems realtively inexpensive.  I have some epsom salts already I can throw out there.  But I'm not going to spend $$$$ for $ worth of peppers.

    R.I.P. jerk.

  • Farmer John reporting from graveside of Bell Pepper.

In hopes of preventing further deaths, I went to the store and purchased bone meal.  I am going to bone meal the hell out of the peppers.  And they will thank me for it.

  • My tomatoes may have some kind of blight, my cukes have bugs, my beans are suffering from shrinkage and the cops confiscated my dope plants. Why do I put myself through this every year?😩
