  • 22. Critters 2: The Main Course (FTV)

Those vicious little rolling porcupines from outer space are back to wreak havoc on a small Texas town.

A blast from start to finish, Critters 2 takes everything from the original that was good and amps it up, making this one of the rare horror sequels that exceeds the original. A remarkable directorial debut by Mick Garris (Amazing Stories, The Stand), the film knows exactly what it is, a cheapie rural Gremlins knock-off, and embraces this identity with confidence. The critter effects have been improved, especially in close-ups, so we can forgive the occasional visible cable or monofilament line. On top of this, they’ve expanded the characters of the aliens and further explore their shape-shifting capabilities with creativity and humor, and even give them some character depth (not to mention a bit of gratuitous toplessness).

Fun fact, the script was co-written by Pitch Black director David Twohy. Lyn Shaye (Insidious) is back as the dotty police station receptionist. Worth the price of admission alone is the scene where a bloody critters-ravaged man in an Easter bunny costume crashes through the church window in the middle of the preacher’s sermon on Easter morning. Awesome!

  • The Little Girl who Lives Down the Lane* ( 1976 Amazon Prime)

"13-year old Rynn Jacobs lives alone in a high-class Quebec small town, but unknown to her neighbours, she is leading a secret and dangerous life."

Where to start? First and what I will most take away from this film, is the exceptional talent of a teenaged Jodie Foster. This girl was born to act. Her performance carries the entire movie.
Next, there are a lot of uncomfortable moments and undertones in this film, some (most) of it is because of what society found (apparently?) acceptable in the 70's. Some I just will never be comfortable with. But the atmosphere and acting was compelling, the story itself had a few holes but wasn't glaring enough to ruin the experience.

@Hedda Gabler there is a hampster scene that I had to cover my eyes and flick off my headphones for. (Martin Sheen makes a hellova great creepy, sadistic mofo')

  • 23. The Brotherhood of Satan (FTV)

Family stumbles into a small rural town that’s held hostage by a mysterious cloaked cult. You guessed it, it’s the Brotherhood of Satan.

This 1971 movie is touted as the missing link between Rosemary’s Baby and The Devil’s Rain. I’m going to have to take their word for it because I haven’t seen The Devil’s Rain, but I can say that The Brotherhood of Satan provides some very creepy and cinematic moments that put me in the mind of the third acts of Eyes Wide Shut and The Omen. The movie works best when it’s keeping things mysterious and putting us in the place of the clueless family that has found this weird town. What’s going on there, why are the people so afraid, and what’s up with all the creepy kids? These are the things that keep us watching.

But the film has some problems, and the first is that the main family is composed of completely paper-thin characters. Really I can’t even call them characters, they are almost completely devoid of personality. Hard to root for someone who has about as much presence as a blank wall. The other issue is one of pacing and lack of plot. Despite setting up a great premise for suspense, once we find out what’s going on, we must still sit and watch the story play itself out…slowly.

Still, the weirdness, striking visuals and sense of mystery in the first half make for some pretty compelling stuff. There were scenes with grim processions of children that out-creeped Children of the Corn. Just wish they’d kept their foot on the gas for the last 30 minutes or so.

    3 out of 5 stars.

    17.  Ghost Ship -- 2002 -- caught on TV

"A salvage crew discovers a long-lost 1962 passenger ship floating lifeless in a remote region of the Bering Sea, and soon notices that its long-dead inhabitants may still be on board."

People don't seem to like this movie.  I really enjoyed it.  Always have. I loved the ensemble cast, I loved the story, I loved the music.  I thought it was pretty well made.

That torch singer at the beginning -- watch her sing Senza Fine (I think that's the name of the Italian song).  She is very sensuous in her movements, you don't see that much anymore.

    18.  Burnt Offerings -- 1976 -- either AMC or TCM

"A family moves into a large old mansion in the countryside which seems to have a mysterious and sinister power over its new residents."

    Burnt Offerings film - Wikipedia

Another one of my go-to's.  But, you really have to suspend disbelief that a family would pay for a summer in this big house that they have to clean-up, maintain and babysit "mother" in the attic.  They PAID these people for the pleasure of being servants.
WHAT?   The Allyardyce's were running a huge scam!  Just love this.  Read the book too and it stays pretty faithful.

    19.  Creepshow -- 1982 -- caught on TV

"An anthology which tells five terrifying tales inspired by the E.C. horror comic books of the 1950s."

    Love everything about it.

    20.  Theater of Blood -- 1973  Hulu

"A Shakespearean actor takes poetic revenge on the critics who denied him recognition."

Another old time favorite.  Sort of in the same vein as Amicus or Hammer.

    21.  Dracula A.D. 1972 -- 1972

"Johnny Alucard raises Count Dracula from the dead in London in 1972. The Count goes after the descendants of Van Helsing."

  • Little Shop of Horrors* (1960 Amazon Prime)

"A clumsy young man nurtures a plant and discovers that it's carnivorous, forcing him to kill to feed it."

This is the first time I've seen this original version. I really liked it, very funny with lots of little quips.
But I still prefer the Rick Moranis, Steve Martin and Ellen Greene 1986 musical. (I was actually trying to find this to watch today, will look for it on YouTube.)

Zack Snyder makes a zombie movie. An outbreak occurs in Las Vegas but they manage to surround the whole city with a wall and prepare to nuke the city to kill em off. Then, when all army has begun to evacuate a businessman get a bright idea. Why not send in a crew to break open a safe with a lot of million dollars in which noone will miss anyway? A planned smooth operation turn into a shit show because these zombies turn out to be both faster and smarter than the normal type. My fave zombie was Valentine, the zombie tiger. The movie tries to be tungue in cheek but it is too long, an usual feature in Snyder movies, and the comedy often, to me, falls flat. A german safecracker that was, i guess, supposed to be a comic relief was just irritating to me. Still, there is enough action for two movies and zombies fight and dies in droves. 3/5

    8-Tremors: Shrieker Island (2020 Netflix)

Burt Gummer must save the day when a wealthy playboy unleashes a gigantic, carnivorous worm and other monsters on a tropical island.

Hopefully the last in the series of Graboid goof-fests.  Having said that, I admit to a certain fondness for tripe like this, and Michael Gross's Burt Gummer is a legend. Really nothing to recommend this film other than some great one liners and visual gags.

    9-The Forest(2016 Netflix)

When her twin sister disappears in Japan, a young American named Sara (Natalie Dormer) becomes determined to find out what happened to her. Sara's investigation leads her to the legendary Aokigahara Forest, located at the base of Mount Fuji. Accompanied by expatriate Aiden, she enters the mysterious wilderness after being warned to "stay on the path." Her investigation plunges her into a dark world where the angry and tormented souls of the dead prey on those who dare to explore the forest.

I am grimly fascinated with this sorrowful place, but the movie did it no justice. Jump scares elicited nary a twitch.  FX are well done, despite the high boredom factor. One thing about it, the location needed no "set dressing"....this "sea of trees" is uber-creepy in and of itself....

  • 24. The Funhouse

Teens spending the night in the carnival funhouse on a dare end up getting more than they bargained for.

Tobe Hooper (T.C.M., Poltergeist, etc.) directs this 1981 atmospheric scare-fest with real style that will bring a smile to your face. This film delivers all the great seedy feeling of the real-life traveling carnival that we all wish we could have seen but probably never did: leering carnival barkers, hootchie-cootchie shows with aging "beauties", deformed fetuses in jars, and a real live two-headed cow. There's a palpable love for the horror genre throughout the film, and all the right buttons are hit.

What keeps this from being a full-on classic is that it simply takes forever to get going--this is an hour long movie stretched out to 99 minutes. Like a real scare house, there isn't much plot or logic, but as rides go, it's a lot of fun for a while. (This is a recycled review from 2014 but my rating stays the same.)

  • 25. Snatchers (FTV)

High school student gives birth to parasitic aliens that attach to your head and control you.

Originally conceived (no pun intended) as a web series, Snatchers feels like the kind of film you’d get if Edgar Wright made a mash-up of Juno, Mean Girls, and Alien. It’s packed with energy and dark humor and bloody effects that are not for the faint of heart, but at the same time has a light touch—the movie never feels oppressive, just darkly fun. This is the kind of movie that uses the phrase “vag-cannon” as a verb (referring to the explosive alien birth) more than once.

Also welcome are the practical effects for the aliens, which are effective and funny, only supplementing with CGI in the background. The already dated youthful dialog and performances feel a bit cheesy at times, and may be a little off-putting to some, but really they are perfectly aligned with the tone of the film. If you enjoyed 2006’s Slither, this almost feels like a fan-made unofficial sequel, at least in spirit.

    27) A Good Marriage* (2015 Amazon Prime)

"A happy and enduring marriage is shattered when a devoted wife, Darcy Anderson (Joan Allen) makes a horrifying discovery in the family garage while her husband (Anthony LaPaglia) is away on one of his business trips.
The evidence reveals a stranger inside her husband exposing his monstrous true nature in this intense thriller based on a short story by Stephen King."

I'd read the short story but didn't recall details outside of the basic plot.

I think this film was well done, but I felt frustration with the story itself.
Yes he eventually got his, but none of the families involved outside of their own, ever got the same blissful life as Darcy's children,  there was no resolution for those families,  no peace nor closure.

I was very disappointed in the ending of this half of the Double feature.

  • 26. John Carpenter’s Vampires (FTV)

A S.W.A.T.-like team of vampire hunters hired by the Catholic church go after a 600-year-old Master Vampire loose in the modern American west.

Finally got around to watching this one and I'm glad I did. For some reason this has been branded as one of John Carpenter's lesser efforts, which I guess it is when you compare it to stuff like Halloween or The Thing, but it's still a pretty awesome movie on its own merits. James Woods leads his vampire hunting crew with the ethics of a biker gang, and he's always entertaining and intense, especially when repeatedly staking the heart of a vampire and telling it to just die already. Ghostbusters, this ain't.

The effects are good, especially the spectacular incendiary deaths the vampires experience when dragged kicking and screaming into the sunlight. Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks) is a stunner, so we can forgive the awkward chemistry she has with Adam (not Alec) Baldwin. This is an all adult cast (not even teenagers!) playing it straight and serious, but there's a good amount of refreshingly non-snarky dark humor to be had as well. Very entertaining!

"Five-year-old Jordan walks miles through the night in the wake of a car accident on an isolated mountain road. But when small-town Sheriff Gil Lujan finally locates the girl's missing mother, Jordan claims the woman is an impostor. What follows is a story of psychological suspense and danger about the ferociously powerful bond between mother and child - and how far each one will go to protect it."

    Okay, bullshit.
There's no way this should have been in the horror (or even "suspense") category. And this is me... me... the one who hates horror and scary things.
The only time I was even remotely worried, was when 5-year-old Jordan was on the road and running between cars.

The plot was weak, acting very mediocre... (the two youngest kids did okay) basically I'll never get this hour-and-a-bit of my life back.

  • 27. The Ghastly Ones (aka Blood Rites) (FTV)

Three Victorian era sisters must spend three nights at their late father’s house to claim their inheritance, but a murderous deformed servant has other plans.

This was the first color film from ultra-low budget exploitation director Andy Milligan, who released this trashy piece of cinema in 1968. From a technical quality standpoint this is a terrible movie, and Milligan’s sloppy hurried style doesn’t do him any favors. The camera is mostly handheld and shaky, we can hear microphones being jostled as the characters bump into each other, and the compositions are awkward. To save money on film stock, the entire movie was filmed using “loose ends”, which are short leftover unexposed film reels from other productions that would normally have been thrown out. Thus, Milligan was able to make a full-length movie for just over $10k, which was extremely cheap even by 1968 standards.

For some reason though, there’s some odd unexplained quality that kept me watching the film. The occasional outbursts of gore are hokey but add some life to the production. The actors do the best they can with an awkward script and nonsensical story, and there’s a lowbrow artsy quality that only the 1960’s seemed to be able to get away with. I get the feeling that Milligan was a tragically untalented and underfunded genius, if such a thing can exist--part Ed Wood, part Andy Warhol. If you like the trashy low budget films of early John Waters, give this one a try, but don’t expect much humor, just dark subversiveness.

    2 out of 5 stars.

An Adaption of Wells classic Island Of Doctor Moreau. Charles Laughton very good as the doctor and it was banned in many countries on its release because of the nature of said doctors experiments and the result of them (the Beastmen). We are more hardened nowadays but the situation is still horrific. Richard Arlen plays the traditional hero and Katherine Burke is The Panther Woman, the most successful of Moreaus creations, in a good way. Bela Lugusi has a minor part too but this is Laughtons movie. I think it holds up reasonably well after 90 years. i'll give it 3,5/5

Maybe its a sign that you're becoming a seasoned, hardskinned, horror movie veteran? And thats why they don't affect you the same way? Maybe you are ready for Carpenters Halloween, The Exorcist and others. Try the spanish movie The Orphanage if you can find it somewhere. You are this years Horror Queen! How does that feel??
I'm okay with The Exorcist, but anything cutty, slashy, basically anything with a blade/sharp thing (actually, I don't do well with choking either) and I struggle.
    But then Dexter. (???!) I know, I know.... 🙄
I don’t watch any of the killing in this though, my face is covered for every bit, it's the story I'm after, not the action.

I appreciate the queen title gesture, 😊 but feel like I have definitely skirted around the edges with my horror viewing; only peeking through a murky window... so don't really deserve it.
