Mad Men

I finished my first on-screen edit of the recent crime story without making too many changes. Then I went at it in hardcopy this morning and found myself making a lot of changes. They are two completely different editing processes, I find. If I haven’t gone through a story at least once with pencil and paper, I don’t feel like I’ve done a thorough job of editing.

I watched episodes two and three of AMC’s Mad Men (season 1) last night. I see that Season 2 is also OnDemand, so I don’t need to worry about trying to record it for once I’m through with Season 1. The main character is getting more and more intriguing all the time: his reticence to discuss his past, even with his wife. The guy on the train who seemed to recognize him, but called him by a different name. (At first I thought it was a case of mistaken identity, but now I’m not so sure.) There was a bit late on episode three where the train conductor handed him a newspaper claiming that he had dropped it, which made me think of spy stories. Since I’ve read very little about the show, I have no idea what direction it’s going in. There was also the interesting scene where he called his wife’s therapist for the full scoop—was that just a bit of 60s chauvinism, wherein the doctor tells the husband things he won’t tell the wife, or is there something else going on? (Don’t tell me‐I’m just musing out loud)

I’m almost to the end of The Hollower. A very solid first novel. I’m really eager to find out how it wraps up.

Big Brother 10 shifts to Thursdays for the live elimination. I’m hoping Angie can get Jessie to go ballistic again so he’ll get voted out. He’s a brute, in more ways than one. The flare up between Jerry and Memphis was something of a surprise. Even though it was probably a bad strategic move, I give Keesha credit for sticking to her guns and not letting Jessie browbeat her.
