What’s this? The guy goes days–weeks even–without posting to his LJ and now two posts in a few hours?
Well, I’ll admit, the first post was made out of guilt. I didn’t really know what I was going to write about when I started, but I felt like I’d been delinquent so I came up with the punting theme and stretched it as far as it could go.
This one is made based on inspiration, a rare enough thing that I go with it when it appears. I was at the local library an hour or so ago and, on a whim I decided to look in the card catalog (anachronism alert–actually their online catalog) to see if they had The Road to the Dark Tower. Okay, it wasn’t exactly a whim–when you have a book published, I think a latent ego gene springs into action so that you find yourself doing all sorts of self-indulgent things, like Googling yourself, searching LiveJournal entries for your name, looking for your book in virtually every bookstore you pass, monitoring your Amazon sales ranking, and looking yourself up in the card catalog of the local library.
It’s not the first time I looked at this particular library, but, lo and behold, the book appeared for the first time, and was also listed as being in stock at the other county library 10 miles up the road. 813.54 VIN is my dewey decimal number. 813.54 seems to cover a miscellaneous non-fiction category of books about book or authors. I went to the stack to see it, but the book wasn’t there. Someone is reading it. How cool.
One of my coworkers stopped by my office a few days ago to say that he’d stumbled across Road at the Phoenix airport bookstore. He told his wife that he knew the author. He reported that she rolled her eyes in the universal symbol for “Yeah, right.”
That ego gene is churning along quite nicely these days, thank you very much. Nothing recessive there!
