I meant to mention that we went to see The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy last weekend. It’s the first time in months — perhaps the first time in 2005 — that we went to a theater to see a film rather than renting on DVD.

The movie was okay. Not great, but it captured a lot of the feel of the novel and other previous incarnations. I have to say, though, that it was the first time I’ve ever felt tempted to leave during the opening credits, which were easily the most boring and annoying opening credits I’ve ever witnessed!

Sam Rockwell was fun as Zaphod–though I didn’t quite like the way the second head was depicted. The guy who played Arthur was very Arthuresque. Zooey Deschanel made a cute Trillian. Not an outstanding actress, but very visually appealing. Wholesome. Bill Nighy was utterly perfect as Slartibartfast and Alan Rickman’s voice work for Marvin was spot on. I’m not sure I liked how Marvin looked but I was okay with it, I guess. Lots of funny stuff and a lot of veddy English humour. Changes to the plot to bring the whole thing full circle and the addition of John Malkovich’s character didn’t bother me a lot. I thought the infinite improbability gags were underplayed, but that was probably just me. I’ll probably rent the DVD when it comes out to see the extras.
