Me and Babs

It’s amusing sometimes how one thing will lead to another. There’s this bagel shop about a mile from where I live that I go to almost every morning before work. It’s where I change gears from writing to the day job. I usually have the same thing (honey wheat bagel, toasted, with margarine and strawberry jam and a couple of cups of hot tea) and read the newspaper. At least the comics section. Sometimes the crossword puzzle.

Anyway, last year the local newspaper did a feature on me when The Road to the Dark Tower came out and some kind soul clipped the article and hung it on the shop’s bulletin board. It’s a little yellow and ragged, but still quite prominent. This morning when I was refilling my tea cup to leave for work, one of the employees said she had something for me. She went back and came out with a brochure and a handwritten note. Seems there’s a local group that is establishing an Author Series and their first event is at the end of November. The keynote speaker is Barbara Bush, appearing in her guise as a best-selling author.

One organizer saw the article and left the note for me to get in touch with them. They’re interested in including some local authors, giving them the opportunity to hawk their wares, as it were, to a captive audience of up to 600 people who are clearly interested in books. Or Barbara Bush, at least. We’ll see how the event works out, but I might get an invitation to attend.

I got the callback from the HPD public affairs officer today telling me that my police ride-along is all set for this Saturday. If all goes well, I’ll probably write about the experience for my next Storytellers Unplugged, which will go up two days later, on the 17th.
