Picking up the pace

After today’s output, I’m almost up to a 1000-word-per-day pace for November to date, which isn’t bad considering I didn’t do any writing at all for almost half those days. I did something I rarely do yesterday, which is write during my lunch break, and I also did a little bit of work last night, too.

The novel takes place over a five-day span, Wednesday to Sunday, and I’m in the midst of the Friday section. Saturday is the big day, the one that everything is supposed to come together, so I’m finding it a bit of a challenge to work through this mid-week slump, as it were. I’m also trying to find the right balance between narrative, dialog and what I call “rumination,” or internal monolog. I think I tend to do too much of the latter, especially in book-length work. I like to spend a lot of time inside characters’ heads, both as a reader and a writer, but I tend to sacrifice forward motion in the story when I do so.

We live in a fairly Republican community, so I’m having to bite my tongue over last night’s results. Though I can’t vote here in the U.S., I am a very interested observer of American politics. I wish the Senate results were more definite and final, but it looks like we may have a long stretch of weeks before the outcome becomes clear. All I can say is: kudos to the Americans for breaking party lines and sending a clear message to the incumbent government. Well done.
