Buggles the mind

Tropical Storm Humberto formed out of nowhere a few miles off the Galveston coast today, so it looks like we’re in for some Texas-sized showers over the next day or two. 5-10″ of rain in some places. If the storm stalls, it could be worse, but probably not as bad as what TS Allison did back in the 90s when downtown Houston turned into the biggest lake in Texas for several days.

Buggles will live on in history as the answer to a trivia question: What group had the first video to air on MTV? Their song “Video Killed the Radio Star” launched the music network. I think it’s about time for an update: “YouTube Created Video Stars.” Someone mentioned Buggles on a message board, and it made me nostalgic for their first album. I owned “The Age of Plastic” on vinyl but never bought it on CD, so I haven’t listened to it in years. I downloaded it from iTunes last night, and it stands up really well. To my thinking, Buggles were the best of what British New Wave had to offer. A bit gimmicky and deliberately sterile, but I love the clean-sounding piano that takes over every now and then. I even owned their little-known second album, Adventures in Modern Recording, back in the day but I don’t have it on CD or on my iPod.

I finished my first editing pass on “Adrift” this morning and started from the top again. Deleted a tertiary character because she caused too many messy, logistical problems. I hope to do a read-through edit this evening and then input my edits, proof it and get it back to the editor by the end of the week. The story I want to submit to the anthology I mentioned yesterday is in submission elsewhere, but they’ve had it for five months so I sent a query about its status and if they don’t get back to me soon I’ll withdraw it. The market it’s with is decent, but nowhere near as good as the new one. Fickle, I know, but this is a business!

Glad to see the way things turned out on Big Brother last night. The first part of the HoH contest looked brutal and I’m amazed the contestants lasted as long as they did. It’ll be interesting to see how things turn out on tomorrow night. I’m still rooting for a Zach/Dick finale, because that’s the only one that will cause the jury to give the decision some serious thought. Speaking of the jurors, we got to see the sequester house last night for the first time. The shot of them all squeezed together on the couch made it seem like they ain’t all getting’ along together so well. Jenn’s deadpan comment summed it up: “That was fun.”

I misset the VCR last night, so I didn’t get Eureka. I’ll have to watch it online or wait for the rebroadcast this weekend. The summer seasons are all wrapping up soon, and then it will be on to the new fall season. There aren’t any new shows that interest me much. I might check out The Big Bang Theory because I’m a nerdy geek, too, but that’s about the only program I’m considering adding to the slate.
