CSI: Transylvania

C.S.I. was great last night, a terrific Hallowe’en episode. The primary story involved the murder of a B movie (DD movie, perhaps) scream queen, whose body is found among a stack of her death mannequins with an axe buried in her back. The cast of suspects includes the usual amalgam of dwarves, giants, burn victims and other horror tropes. It was both a parody and a love letter to the genre. The scene where the pathologist is being introduced to slasher movies at the end is funny. He’s amazed at the forensic detail, the simulated internal body parts he can make out as someone is decapitated.

Survivor also had one of its all time classic moments last night, as a player produced what the player believed to be an immunity idol only to have Jeff toss it into the fire. Classic, I tell you. The merge was telegraphed in last week’s preview, but the impromptu immunity challenge was nicely done. Every now and then Jeff lets down his guard and has a moment or two with the cast, and we got to see a couple of those last night, when he seemed less “scripted.” I was sorry to see the player who was evicted go, though. There were several others who could have gone that I would have missed less.

I plowed through more research material last night, and I plan to use the weekend to conquer the rest of the stack. I also made internet contact with an expert in the topic and he volunteered to answer questions if I came up with things my research didn’t cover. He’s already provided a couple of valuable tips. If the book’s ever published, I know someone who’s going to make the acknowledgments page.

I received no rejection letters yesterday. Yay!
