I started a short story this morning that I essentially wrote backwards. Not exactly, but I certainly didn’t go about it in my usual linear fashion.

I wrote the first paragraph. Then I wrote the closing line. Next I wrote the paragraph before the closing line and the two or three paragraphs before that.

Then I went back to the top and started with paragraph two and worked my way toward the ending. I haven’t quite gotten there yet, but almost. It was a very strange way to write a story (it will be less than 1000 words when finished), but it seemed to work in this instance.

Nothing surprises me about writing any more.

Some day I’d like to write a story where you can reverse the order of the paragraphs and get a completely different plot. Sort of like a palindrome, but not exactly.

Mick Garris has a new series coming out on Showtime this fall called Masters of Horror. Thirteen horror directors making one-hour, no-holds-barred films, many of them based on material from other masters of the genre. The Showtime trailer is now up on the official web page. Almost makes me want to get cable TV.
