Thanks for all the fish

Rita is now an immediate threat to our region. Mandatory evacuation for the coast, voluntary evacuation as far inland as the county where I live. Schools and businesses are to close Thursday and Friday. The store shelves were empty of water and D-cell batteries early last night. Home Hardware stores reported selling as many as 400 generators in a single day.

Where I live it’s unlikely to flood, though everything around us could flood, which would trap us in a very small area. However, we have a lot of trees around us and heavy winds from the ‘cane and tornados could do a lot of damage if they fall over. The storm won’t hit for over 48 hours and already there’s a feeling of catastrophe around us. People are nervous. Do you stay or go? What if the storm turns at the last minute and misses us — won’t we feel foolish for boarding up the house and leaving? What if it doesn’t — won’t we feel foolish if a 30 foot pine comes crashing through the roof.

Where are the time machines when we need them? It would be so nice to peek ahead into Sunday and see what we should do today.

Probably won’t be (m)any posts from me on here until early next week, when I’ll report back on what we decided to do and what happened.
