I’ve been revising the short story I mentioned last time. I’m in one of those infinite editing loops where I hope that each pass will be the last, but I end up changing something else each time around so that I have to read it again to make sure it’s okay…and then I find something else to change. To my surprise, the final word count ended up right at my estimate: 3500 words. Surprised because I pulled that number out of thin air without any real reason for choosing it other than that it felt right.

I’m thinking about taking a trip to New York in August to attend Harry, Carrie and Garp, a two-night event at Radio City Music Hall featuring JK Rowling, Stephen King and John Irving. It’s a charity event and it sounds like a blast.

I haven’t had as much time for reading lately as usual. All the TV shows I watch are coming to an end for the summer next week or the week after, so that should free up several hours a week. I’m getting toward the end of The Flood, book 1 of Michael McDowell’s Blackwater series. I’m thoroughly convinced that I read at least this book ‘way back when I first bought the series sometime in the mid-80s. I know I never finished the series, though.

Lost continues to entertain me, though it seems like a lot of people are falling away from it. The only show I’ve consciously given up this season is Desperate Housewives, which simply got too silly for me. I haven’t gotten wrapped up in all the ancillary Lost stuff—the Hanso Foundation web site and numerous others, with their time-consuming puzzles. I also glanced at Bad Twin by Gary Troup at the bookstore the other day and after a few minutes of jumping around in the text put it back on the shelf and left the store empty-handed. I’m sure the pursuit of these puzzles is plenty of fun, but I can’t summon the interest or spare the time. I did go through the 24 stages of the Da Vinci Code puzzles on Google. Maybe I’ll at least win one of the 10,000 codex replicas.
