Got my rewrite orders from Rue Morgue, so I spent the evening at the computer and polished it off this morning. Sent it in to the Managing Editor before I left for work. My first version was too bland, I think. Just the facts, ma’am, kinda writing. I may have gone to far in the opposite direction with the rewrite. We’ll see when I hear back from the editor again.
The only thing I watched on TV last night was Jericho, which continues to be sufficiently interesting to keep me coming back. It’ll be interesting to see what happens down the road with the distribution of several major characters to the windmill factory. The doctor’s story was particularly good last night.
I also managed to finish Dan Simmons’ The Terror last night. I think I started it back in October, and put it aside several times to read other things. I liked the book well enough, but I found it all too easy to put down. The last sections (with Crozier and Silence) are quite good, though I could have done without the mythology chapters and actually skipped most of those sections. I don’t feel like I missed anything by doing so. All in all I would say the book is about one-third too long and a little too in love with its research.
I taped LOST and watched it during my lunch break today. It was a very well plotted episode, reminiscent of something out of an Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

I guessed early on that the duo weren’t dead, and Vincent’s actions around them only served to confirm that for me. It just goes to show that when something might seem predictable, it can still entertain.
And then just when you think you know what’s going to happened, they pile on the dirt. I think I actually said “Holy *expletive*” when the camera pulled back to reveal the mound. Even after the first few shovels full I thought there was hope for them.
I loved the way they threaded things together with the previous scenes, putting Arzt and Ethan and all the other characters into scenes where we didn’t see them before.
Nikky was fun to look at, but she’s never going to win an Emmy, either as an actress in a TV show or as an actress playing an actress. Still, the show was set up like an episode of the over-the-top Exposé, so a little ham was to be expected. It also seemed to continue to make subtle nods to King’s work by using inspiration from Autopsy Room 4.
