Looks like I’m going on a business trip to Japan at the end of May. A week in Tokyo. Takes two days to get there and less than an hour to get home. I think I’ve been there four times before, but it’s been over a decade since my last trip. I used to travel a lot with my day job, but for the past six or seven years hardly at all. Now that I’m writing—which I wasn’t at the time of any of my previous visits—I suspect I will be looking at the country differently, and with an eye to absorbing details for something in the future.
I had a hard time getting into gear this morning, so I did what I often do in that situation—I edited. I revised the first five or six pages of the story in progress, then when I finished up and went to the shower, where my mind continued to work on the story, as it so often does. During those fifteen minutes or so, I came up with what I consider a really good twist on the tale that I have to go back and implement tomorrow morning. It’s great! I thought I had the story all figured out, but now this new concept adds a whole new dimension to it.
The first chapter of Fatal Revenant, book 2 of the final chronicles of Thomas Covenant, is online at Stephen R. Donaldson’s web site. Six more months until the book is published. I can’t wait. I’ve been following this series since the second chronicles came out back when I was in university.
