I rarely make two posts in one day, but two things occurred to me since my last post. First, I am a co-author of the lead article in issue #73 of Rue Morgue magazine: Apocalypse, Maine: Frank Darabont, award-winning director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, returns to his horror roots with The Mist, another big-screen adaptation of a Stephen King fan favourite. The low-budget Lovecraftian siege story rolls into theatres this month. Interviews with Darabont and lead Thomas Jane. by Bev Vincent, James Grainger, Aaron Von Lupton and Dave Alexander.
The Darabont interview is mine, and I co-wrote the accompanying lead-in article. Should be available in a week or so, I’d guess. You can see the cover and the full table of contents here.
Also, I saw parts of Psycho on AMC this weekend. Now, having commercial interruptions isn’t the best way to experience a suspenseful movie like that, but I was reminded of how brilliant a movie this is. Not just the parts everyone remembers, either. The long conversation between Norman Bates and Marion Crane where they discuss taxidermy and traps is a fantastic piece of writing. When seen with the full knowledge of what’s going on with Norman, the foreshadowing is very nicely done indeed.
