NECON minus six

Didn’t get much writing done this morning. I plan to tackle one of the new short stories this weekend, and I’m leaning toward the caper story, but my mind could change between now and then.

I’m about halfway through The Fifth Floor by Michael Harvey. It’s not bad, but a few things are happening too easily for my liking. The way the woman he meets by chance one day while jogging (they had a previous history, though not romantic) tumbles into his bed. The way the first theory of the crime works out to be exactly right. The way his nemesis suddenly pours out his heart and becomes sympathetic. It’s possible that it will be revealed later in the book that there was some reason all of this happens, that it’s a setup of some sort, but if that’s not the case I’ll be disappointed.

Someone recommended making this Post A Rejection Letter Friday, but I don’t really have any interesting ones to post. My favorite, though, was a “brief” form rejection that was sent on a strip of paper 8-½” wide by about 1″ deep, which means they could get 11 rejection letters per page. The “letter” rattled around in the envelope like a Chinese fortune. Needless to say, it didn’t contain much guidance or feedback. It’s probably in my file, but I’d be hard pressed to find it.
