A ton of awesomeness

I finally received my copy of CD #59 last night. The magazine has been on newsstands for several weeks but, owing to some problems with the mailing house, copies are still trickling out to subscribers. I’ve already turned in my column for #60, which is supposed to be out in six weeks, and just received my deadline for #61, which is the first of the post-Morrish issues.

I was asked to write an introduction for a book yesterday. The only time I’ve done one of those in the past was for The Illustrated Stephen King Trivia Book, in essence introducing our own book. First time I’m doing it for someone else.

This morning I proofed the intro and the first two chapters of the work in progress. I have to turn in the first deliverable tomorrow morning, so I’m spending the remaining time tidying it up. It’s not my last crack at the text, but I want to give them a good first impression of the book. I found a few typos, reworded a couple of sentences and deleted some unnecessary material. Nothing major.

Last night was given over to Lost. I’m really glad I didn’t skip the recap show, because it was more than a simple summary–they approached it more from a “who is everyone” perspective, which was pretty clever. They were able to gloss over a lot of plot by focusing on the characters.

Then came the two hours of new material, which was nothing less than amazing. It felt so good to be back with the group again, splintered and fragmented though they were. There were times in earlier seasons when I felt like the story was veering off on a tangent that I wasn’t completely sure I liked. None of that here. Everything is proceeding organically and it seemed like an entire season’s worth of plot development in those two hours. It was great seeing some old faces pop up again, if only for a few minutes, and very cool to discover how they had woven together some disparate threads–like who Daniel’s mother is. I saw speculation somewhere that we might have seen Miles’s parents in the opening moments of the show last night, too, which was mind blowing, as was our first glimpse of where Miles was last night as well.

I pay my highest tribute to the writers for the way they have managed to take a totally despicable character like Ben and gradually turn it around so that we are rooting for him. He is still working at his own perverse agenda, but he might actually be “the good guy” compared to Widmore. At the same time they’ve taken Jack, our reluctant hero, and knocked him off his pedestal so many times that we have to wonder why everyone was so taken with him to begin with. Got a kick out of Ben’s “one-step” program for drug recovery. Line of the evening: “Why is there a dead Pakistani on my sofa?” I found myself chuckling out loud at some of the developments, I was so struck by their cleverness. It’s great to be back in Lost-ville.
